Press Freedom:
New Group to Defend Press Freedom in North Africa

Journalists and human rights activists attending a meeting held on 6-7 June in Casablanca, Morocco, have decided to join efforts by establishing the Working Group on Press Freedom and Free Expression in North Africa (WGFENA) following the deteriorating press freedom situation in their countries.

The group aims to link regional and international defenders of press freedom to exert pressure and encourage press freedom and freedom of expression. It will be done by information-sharing among the founder organizations and organizing campaigns and solidarity actions to denounce violations and support the victims.

The group, which includes journalists unions and human rights groups from Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia, will be initially coordinated by the Tunisian journalist Sihem Bensedrine and Aboubaker Jamai, publisher of the Moroccan weekly Le Journal Hebdomadaire.
