Follow-up Workshop for Iraqi teachers in Cairo

Through its Newspapers In Education Development Project supported by Norske Skog, the World Association of Newspapers in collaboration with UNESCO is holding a workshop in Cairo from 14-16 February as a follow-up to a Getting Started seminar organized for 15 Iraqi teachers and other participants in December 2005.

Sessions will include presentations by Egyptian publisher Hisham Kassem of Al Masry Al Youm and Iraqi editor Ismael Zayer of Assabah Al Jadeed on how newspapers operate. Based on these presentations, the teachers will recreate a newsroom, choosing stories, editing content and putting together a newspaper that appeals to a young audience.

The teachers and other participants were invited to learn more about NIE: the practice of using the newspaper as an additional "textbook" and an invaluable classroom resource. Mohammed Hereika, an editor of Al Ayyam, a Sudanese daily, will also share his NIE experience since his paper started the project in Sudan.
